SoOoOoOoOo tedious!!! Good riddance to this "book. View all 5 comments. I'm making an exception to this book for two reasons: 1 all it is doing is telling me boring things instead of showing 2 the third person narrative is rigid and feels more like a screenplay than a story.
Where's the descriptions of setting, characters, etc. I was really hoping for a rich look at Mexico and mining during the US civil war 's instead it was a lecture on so-so did this and so-so did that. And all I want to know is why? And how does that affect our lead guy? But I don't want to learn this via a stuffy conversation of basic figures and investments. Again there needs to be more. More richness, more feelings and less content.
I read a lot of historical fiction and when done right you feel like your there and not just a spectator. The Vineyard made me feel like I was reading a historical document describing the facts with no feelings, setting or context applied. This is an honest and unbiased review. View 1 comment. Maria Duenas is not a familiar author to me at all.
I think mostly because her books seem to be more about culture and heaving than something I would normally read, however when her latest book THE VINEYARD came up for review, I loved the cover and the description sounded like it would be right up my alley. It would be something different if nothing else. This book was a little outside my comfort zone in terms of location. While this book was set in a number of areas such as Mexico and Cuba, it had hints of European roots which helped make me enjoy it.
Though I will say that at times I felt like there was a little too much going on in terms of location. I think it might have been easier to digest if there had been more of a focus on one region rather than trying to incorporate so much.
Her details are vivid and vibrating with richness. In that sense I felt like she did a marvelous job and I can see why she has been compared to Kate Morton and Kristin Hannah. I also enjoyed how she explored the national identity of the characters. That was something unique to this book and I appreciated how well she illustrated the Mexican people and heritage in a way that was so much more than something simple.
She went to great effort to showcase the people as they were rather than what was imagined. Well done! This book was a 4 star for me, I liked the story and the characters but at times I felt like the movement of locations was just too much and overwhelming. I appreciated the effort but I was much more wrapped up in the characters than the locations. See my full review here It is not often I give a book rating of one star but here it is. It was difficult to keep up with the people, places, things as the story line of The Vineyard jumped around quite a bit with all of those things.
There was history detail in the story as well and but it j It is not often I give a book rating of one star but here it is. There was history detail in the story as well and but it just did not grab me in any way. I literally gave up and shut the book down after several chapters in. Ugh - Not fun at all.
So a duel follows, but not with guns or swords And so it goes as it turns out Gustavo, the husband in cause, has his secrets and family history in which Mauro gets involved more deeply than he wishes when he meets fascinating Soledad, cousin and former flame of Gustavo Anyway after a slow beginning in which I put the book down many times, the novel starts ripping when Mauro gets to Havana and then it just becomes impossible to put down until the final pages and the ending which is quite as expected but excellent nonetheless Overall, another superb yarn from the author of Time in Between, again starting slow but then getting going with a vengeance Highly recommend and hopefully an English language edition will be published soon This historical novel has an ambitious range of settings from Mexico City to Havana to Jerez.
The protagonist, Mauro Larrea, faces losing the fortune he has made in Mexican silver mines, and sets out for Havana. There he gambles everything on unseen properties in Spain.. The formality of the social life of the aristocracy and the bordellos of Havana are brought to life This historical novel has an ambitious range of settings from Mexico City to Havana to Jerez.
The formality of the social life of the aristocracy and the bordellos of Havana are brought to life through vivid descriptions. The plot is a straightforward historical romance but quite engaging, although at times the suspense is undermined - such as when two characters discuss their plans for an upcoming key confrontation in such detail that the outcome is never in doubt for the reader.
The characterisation is not as strong as the descriptions of the settings. Apart from Larrea, who is a well rounded and interesting protagonist, the other characters are quite flat and mainly serve to advance the central plot. Larrea's daughter Mariana fares the worst - she has the potential to be a strong and intelligent character, a counterpoint to her father's impulsiveness, but is largely reduced to being described in terms of her pregnancy.
At every appearance, there is a reference to her 'belly', which soon becomes irritating. I am not sure if the responsibility lies with the writer or the translator, but the language used is often outlandish and over dramatic. A more understated style could have actually heightened the tension and drama, and left the actions of the characters to speak for themselves.
At times the prose even verges on the bizarre, and this distracted my attention from the story. Overall I would give this 2. I received a free copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway. Mauro Larrea has found his fortune in mining. He did it with his own hands and now is living a very comfortable life.
Mauro sees another opportunity in mining and has ordered very expensive equipment to reopen a mine. He has staked everything he owns on the project. He loses everything in an unfortunate incident. Mauro, forever the gambler, takes another risky chance by paying his creditors off on an ill advised loan. Mauro, forever the gambler, wins an abandoned vineyard in Spain in a billiard game. He travels to Spain to sell the vineyard and pay off his loan and return to the life he once knew.
He becomes involved with Soledad Montalvo whose family owned the vineyard. The story takes the reader from Mexico, to Cuba, and to Spain. It is a story that shows family ties and family secrets. One wonders, throughout the book, how things will turn out for Mauro.
This is a man who pulled himself up from his own bootstraps and took high risks and never wavered from his objectives. A great read that incorporates a love story, family situations, and the gut and grit of a determined individual.
While I liked this book, I didn't love it. I'd heard so many amazing things about the author's other book "El tiempo entre costuras" The time in between that, although I haven't read it, I was expecting probably too much. This is the story of Mauro Larrea, a widower who emigrated from Spain to Mexico in the 19th century, worked in the mines, raised his two children and landed himself a place in society, only to lose it all after a bad business venture. From Mexico he goes to Cuba and then back to Spain.
I know this is fiction, but it was way too improbable. Even if money can buy most things, it was too much to believe. Larrea is neither good nor bad, but he doesn't seem to have much of a conscience. The other main character, Soledad Montalvo is much like him. They lacked depth.
The plot and place descriptions, on the contrary, are extremely good and detailed For me, it read like a soap opera: too many adventures, a bit of romance and a happy ending. I received this book in exchange for an honest review I'll start off by saying, I never not finish a book!!! But this one I am putting down after reading the first part 13 chapters!!!! I just dread reading this book and that's not good!!
In my opinion the characters are completely one-dimensional and lack any character!! Then what's worse is the details have details!! Seriously do we need extra details for a plot that's all over the place?!?! This just makes it very hard to keep up with a story that is all is over the place!!!
Too draining and jus I'll start off by saying, I never not finish a book!!! Too draining and just kills me to try reading!! So sorry, the first book I've not finished, but I'm so glad to be putting this one down!! I did win this book in Goodreads givaways. Guess I should be thankful I didn't spend any money on it!! I won this in the giveaways in exchange for an honest review. A 19th century mine owner loses everything and has to start again.
This was an interesting look into life in South and Central America in the s. The descriptive writing was lovely but I didn't find the storyline wholly fascinating. A sweeping historical novel that takes the reader from Mexico to Cuba and on to Andalusia in the s… The novel is set against the period of the American Civil War which impacted on life and trade in Mexico and Cuba, and against the last years of the slave trade, officially abolished earlier in the century, but still very much part of the fabric of society — sugar plantations in Cuba, for example, relied on slave labour from Africa, but the owners supported the abolition in the main because they feared revolt, not out of principle.
A tumultuous time, then, forms the backdrop to the story of Mauro Larrero who, as the book opens, is still successfully mining silver in Mexico. That is, until he invests in a pump, due to come from America. But the promised investment does not bring the rewards he is promised and he soon on his uppers. Ventures in Cuba beckon. Larrero is, at heart, a chancer, he plays a shrewd game of billiards which take his fortune in quite another direction, to wit to Valencia, where he has acquired a vineyard estate.
Intrigue and family are woven into the narrative as he traverses the Spanish-speaking world, facing new dilemmas and challenges on each leg of his journey. It is clear that a huge amount of research has gone into the story for both social, locational and political setting. How the old colonial world is starting to make way for fresh ideas.
This is a novel that will take you to the Spanish speaking world of the second half of the 19th Century. It plots a convincing story set against a colourful backdrop. Larrea becomes immersed in the wine trade, ever haunted by Andrade, his financial conscience. A fascinating read, no less than what we would expect from Maria Duenas. The first thing that I noticed reading this beautiful novel was the language of words spoken and the way which words have been described in every setting. It beams readers with pinpoint accuracy to the heart and soul of s Mexico, Cuba, and Spain on a magic carpet ride that they will be sorry to have end.
Kate Morton, author of The House at Riverton. Feb 28, Yolanda rated it it was amazing. I am currently reading this fascinating page-turner. It is probably as good as her first novel maybe even better , you laugh and cry and travel across continents with these 4D characters who simply pop up from the page.
I will edit my review once I finish the book, but needless to say, I recommend it from the bottom of my heart. I really enjoyed the characters. Rich scenery. It was a much longer book than I typically read and for the first half of the book I often was tempted to quit reading it. In the end, I enjoyed it and I am glad I stuck out out. Feb 16, Maite Comas barnes rated it liked it. Really enjoyed it, but found it a little too sweet.
The goodies are too good and the baddies too bad. Not her best book. Took until the end for the book actually get interesting. The exotic locations, the pioneer spirit and strong characters kept me kept me enthralled till the very end. In progress I didn't make the rules. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. And the higher the stakes, the bigger the fall. On the verge of losing everything, Mauro Larrea sets out to maintain his family's livelihood, reputation, and prominent position in society.
By nature, Mauro is a risk-taker; fortunately, his gambles have all paid off until now. I loved the way her writing clearly painted a picture of each scene in my mind. I highlighted this particular passage illustrating the streets of Mexico City: "Throngs of people of diverse complexions filled the streets bustling to and fro as they did every day. Indigenous women carrying huge bunches of flowers, their infants wrapped in shawls on their backs; dark-skinned men balancing on their heads big earthenware jars brimming with sweetmeats or lard; beggars and soldiers, honest citizens and charlatans, all moving about ceaselessly from morning to night.
I did not relate to the characters or their circumstances; hence, reading this book felt like a chore. Even though my mind engaged with the language, my heart simply could not connect with any of the characters or their personal dilemmas. Perhaps the only exception to this is Larrea's right-hand man, Santos Huesos.
Santos Huesos, loyal to the bitter end, falls in love with an enslaved woman on their visit to Cuba. Nov 02, ManOfLaBook. Mauro Larrea has built his fortune with his own two hands, first toiling at mines and then owning them.
